All MLB Clubs in the US are Utilizing TEAM Training,

Funded by Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and Coors

In a demonstration of the power of this unique partnership, Major League Baseball and its 28 clubs in the US have committed to training their operations employees in effective alcohol management using the TEAM program in preparation for the 2003 season. Ushers, ticket takers, security personnel, and parking lot attendants will spend several hours learning to evaluate guests to spot those that are at a high risk of becoming intoxicated (or already are) and how to interact with those individuals to reduce the likelihood of alcohol-related incidents.

The universal acceptance of the TEAM program would not be possible without the financial commitment from Beer Institute and its members. Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and Coors are providing $4,000 in TEAM participant manuals to each club. The donation is split between the local distributor and national brewer.

To further acknowledge the success of this partnership, commemorative posters are being produced. Designated driver booths at every stadium will be stocked with the posters to remind the fans that TEAM is helping MLB and the nation’s brewers succeed in making ballparks a safer place to enjoy a game. Posters will also be distributed to the local sports media and city officials in each MLB market along with a Rolodex mailer defining the TEAM Coalition. In addition, a satellite media tour and radio tour featuring Kevin Hallinan, Sr. VP of Security and Facility Management for MLB and the incoming TEAM Chairman, are scheduled for Thursday March 27th and Friday March 28th, respectively. April IDP is NFL-Focused

The Instructor Development Program (IDP) scheduled for April 10th and 11th at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA – the new home of the New England Patriots – is being marketed primarily to NFL stadium operators and concessions managers.

The date for the workshop was selected to coincide with the schedule of stadium operators for the NFL so that the new certified TEAM trainers that complete this workshop will have sufficient time to train their stadium employees in effective alcohol management in time for the start of the 2003/2004 season.

While anyone is welcome to attend the workshop, it is the hope of TEAM that appropriate scheduling of IDPs will ensure consistent participation by each league. Currently, the December and February IDPs are heavily attended by MLB managers. TEAM also plans to offer an August IDP for NBA and NHL arena managers.

June IDP Tailored to NCAA

Ohio State University will host the TEAM IDP on June 18th and 19th. The NCAA has helped TEAM market this workshop to universities. The program will include a special section regarding crowd management in light of the incidents that occurred during the most recent college football season.

The program is designed for all universities – not just those that sell alcohol in the stadium. The TEAM alcohol management training program focuses on employees like ushers, ticket takers, and security personnel who have to interact with fans who may already be intoxicated before they enter the stadium.

Again, this workshop is open to anyone who would like to attend. However, managers of university stadiums and arenas are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop. Click on Registration Form to register for either of the upcoming TEAM IDPs.

3D Month Press Conference Hosted by TEAM

TEAM hosted the annual call to action press conference in preparation for the year-end holidays - a time when alcohol-related fatalities on the nation’s highways traditionally increase. The press conference brought together high-profile individuals and organizations at the MCI Center on December 18th, 2003. The 17,000+ empty seats at the arena represented the number of deaths due to alcohol-related crashes annually.

Speakers included Dr. Jeffrey Runge, Administrator for NHTSA; John Walters, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP); Wendy Hamilton, President of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD); Chief Bill Berger, Immediate Past President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); and Dr. Bella Dinh-Zarr, National Director of Traffic Safety Policy for AAA. Jill Pepper, Executive Director of the TEAM Coalition, moderated the press conference.

State, County, and Federal Patrol Officers from DC, VA, MD, PA, NY, MN, and US Park Police attended the event. A demonstration of the checkpoint mobile sobriety testing facility was given outside the MCI Center immediately after the press conference. Over 50 media representatives attended the event. USA Today, CNN, CBS, and many others covered the conference. To find out more about this event, click on 12/18/02 MCI Press Conference.

TEAM Represented

at NCAA Summit

Jeff Becker, President of Beer Institute and Finance Committee Chairman for the TEAM Coalition, was in attendance at the NCAA Summit on Sportsmanship and Fan Behavior held on Thursday, February 20th in Dallas, TX.

Over 150 participants, including Conference Commissioners, Athletic Directors, and Coaches, attended the 1-day meeting in hopes of providing solutions to the well-publicized incidents of violence that occurred during the most recent college football season.

Topics included identifying the problems and issues, campus environment, student and fan behavior and abuse of alcohol, and media responsibility.

TEAM will follow-up with NCAA by producing a document outlining the best practices utilized by professional sports leagues and stadiums with respect to crowd management.

TEAM Taking a Pro-Active Approach

with Stadium Management and Traffic Safety Industy

In an effort to promote the TEAM Coalition and the alcohol management training program, TEAM has begun to reach out to the stadium management industry.

·         In early January, Bill Squires attended the IAAM Stadium Management Conference in Phoenix, AZ representing the TEAM Coalition.

·         Later that month, Jill Pepper attended the Stadium Managers Association Conference in Palm Springs, CA. Jill was able to present the TEAM program to the attendees during the Best Practices workshop led by Bill Squires, Vice Chairman of SMA.

·         In February, TEAM was well represented at the Sports Business Journal’s Sports Venue Safety and Security Conference in Houston, TX where Kevin Hallinan gave a keynote address on hot topics for MLB. Alcohol management training was one of his strongest suggestions. And several other speakers and attendees of the conference gave kudos to the TEAM program.

·         Before the IDP at the Atlanta Zoo on February 11th , Christy Coonradt gave a well-received presentation at the TEAM Georgia Board Meeting highlighting the activities and strategic initiatives of TEAM at a national level and what organizations like TEAM Georgia can do at the state level.

·         In March, TEAM will exhibit at the Lifesavers Conference in Chicago, IL.

·         In April, TEAM will exhibit at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention, NAB2003, sharing the National Campaign booth in the NAB Zone, in Las Vegas, NV.

·         In July and August, TEAM will be in New Orleans twice – first for the International Association of Assembly Managers Annual Conference and second for the Governors Highway Safety Association Annual Meeting.

If you plan to attend any of these upcoming events, please stop by and say “Hello.”
