June 15, 2005 (Washington D.C.) – TEAM Coalition (Techniques for Effective Alcohol
Management) recently added Clear Channel Entertainment (NYSE:CCU, CCE) and Delaware
North Companies – Sportservice to its list of member organizations, bringing the
total number of coalition members to seventeen. TEAM Coalition is an alliance of
professional and collegiate sports, entertainment facilities, concessionaires, the
beer industry, broadcasters, governmental traffic safety experts, and others working
together to promote responsible drinking and positive fan behavior at sports and
entertainment facilities.
TEAM Coalition focuses on three main efforts –
- Training for facility employees in the effective sale, service, and
consumption of alcohol
- Promotional campaigns to encourage fans to designate a sober driver and
behave appropriately
- Defining, communicating, and enforcing alcohol service and fan conduct
policies at sports and entertainment facilities
TEAM training involves employees from both concessionaires and facility operators.
Since 2001, over 45,000 facility employees from ushers and ticket takers to beer vendors
have become certified. Each year several facilities are recognized for outstanding
achievement in training. In 2004, both Clear Channel Entertainment and Sportservice
earned TEAM’s Championship Performance awards for the training conducted at White River
Amphitheater in Washington State (CCE) and Cleveland Browns Stadium in Ohio (Sportservice).
“We recognize the enormous benefits TEAM Coalition programs bring to the live sports
and entertainment industry,” commented Mike McGee, CCE’s Chief Administrative Officer.
“CCE is committed to supporting the Coalition’s programs that benefit our patrons through
increased staff awareness and enhanced venue operations.”
TEAM’s Responsibility Has Its Rewards™ promotion for designated drivers has grown since
2003 to involve fans of MLB, MLS, and the NFL, with plans to include the NBA in the fall.
The promotion encourages fans to register to be a designated driver at the stadium or
arena where their favorite teams compete through programs sponsored by brewers and
concessionaires. Each time fans pledge to be a designated driver they are entered into a
sweepstakes for a chance to receive tickets to the World Series®, MLS Cup™, Super Bowl®,
or NBA Finals®. In 2004, over 160,000 baseball fans and more than 80,000 football fans
participated. The goal for 2005 is to reach over 300,000 fans across all four leagues.
"Becoming a member of the TEAM Coalition sends an important message to our organization's
employees and to the communities in which we operate," stated Sportservice president
Rick Abramson. "Sportservice will continue to set a high standard when it comes to
employee training, law compliance and creating a fan friendly environment."
2005 marks the twentieth year of the Coalition’s existence. One of its original missions
was to establish alcohol service policies at sports and entertainment facilities. These
policies to set a time to stop serving before the end of the event, to ask for IDs to
ensure underage patrons are not consuming alcohol, and to limit the number of beers a
patron can purchase at one time have become standard procedures at most facilities.
According to TEAM Coalition Chairman and Major League Baseball Senior Vice President
for Security and Facility Management, Kevin Hallinan, “TEAM has played a major role in
improved fan behavior which has increased attendance at our games. We often say that
TEAM stands for ‘Together Everyone Achieves More.’ So the more organizations represented
on the Coalition, the better the game day experience will be for all sports fans.”
