Baltimore, Md. (May 18, 2007) – The 132nd running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course will
include a reminder for fans to continue to act responsibly and respect the rights of others while
celebrating the second jewel in thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown. The Maryland Jockey Club, Heineken USA,
Maryland Turf Caterers and the TEAM Coalition announced today that they will implement an action plan at
Pimlico Race Course designed to encourage fans attending the Preakness to drink responsibly and use a designated
driver, because Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.
“Ensuring that our guests consume alcohol responsibly will help continue our tradition of providing a wholesome,
exciting, and fan-friendly environment at Pimlico,” said Karin De Francis, Executive Vice President of the
Maryland Jockey Club. “The designated driver program is an important component of our pledge to the community that
everyone attending the Preakness will have a good time, but not at the expense of others.”
The efforts at Pimlico this weekend will focus on the following key areas:
- Communicating a series of messages to the public that prompt attitude changes and remind
spectators of the importance of responsible behavior. Responsibility banners will be placed throughout
the track facilities and infield grounds. Public service announcements will run continuously at the track;
- Hospitality Food & Beverage concession workers and Pimlico Race Track security personnel are certified in
TEAM Coalition’s effective alcohol management training program, designed to help employees prevent
problems before they happen. All servers will be wearing “WE I.D.” buttons;
- Implementing the designated driver program to combat drunk driving. Fans will be encouraged to choose a
designated driver to ensure everyone has a safe ride home. Under the designated driver program, one person
from a group attending the event volunteers to refrain from drinking alcohol and is responsible for providing
transportation for the rest of the group. As a reward for ensuring his/her party gets home safely, the designated
driver will receive small token gifts - a Preakness hat, branded lip balm, sunscreen, or a battery-operated, portable fan.
- Each fan who makes the designated driver pledge is entered into the 'Responsibility Has Its Rewards'
sweepstakes. One winner will be randomly selected and receive a prize pack full of rewards, including a
pair of tickets to the 2008 Preakness, for their responsible decision.
“We are proud to continue the tradition of Responsibility Has Its Rewards to provide additional support our staff can use to
make the Preakness experience even more enjoyable for fans,” noted Karin De Francis.
“HUSA is proud to be affiliated with the TEAM effort at this year’s Preakness. As a
brewer we are committed to the responsible consumption of our products. We applaud TEAM for
consistently promoting their designated driver program and we are glad to supplement this effort
with an alternative transportation option through promotion of our 800TAXICAB partnership. added
Tamara Moore, Heineken USA.
“The success of any alcohol management program depends on everyone joining together to insure that
good sense and good times are two of the featured attractions at the Preakness,” says TEAM Coalition
Executive Director Jill Pepper. “We are proud to be part of the team reminding all fans of the 132th
running of the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course to designate a driver and always buckle up.”

inaugural Preakness Stakes, named after the winner of the Dinner Party Stakes run at Pimlico’s first

1938 Pimlico Special. The record-breaking 2006 Preakness Stakes attendance, 118,402, was the largest
crowd ever to witness a sporting event in Maryland. On May 19, 2007, Pimlico will host the 132nd running
of the Preakness Stakes.
