Always Prepared. Always Aware. Pledge

ALWAYS PREPARED. ALWAYS AWARE: The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has developed a new campaign called, “Always Prepared. Always Aware.” In 2004, 1,152 people were killed and 73,376 injured in 138,353 vehicle crashes in Arizona. The campaign was created in an effort to make Arizona’s streets less dangerous through educating motorists about safe driving habits. Sorenson and Discount Tire have teamed up with the state of Arizona in its education endeavors. Sorenson is being featured in a public service announcement that will broadcast throughout the state, reiterating the campaign’s three main points, “check your tires regularly, always wear your seat belt, and be focused on driving while behind the wheel.”

Then at PIR, fans who signed a pledge promising to be “Always Prepared. Always Aware.” were entered into a drawing for the chance to win a set of wheels from Discount Tire, a Sprint camera cell phone, or tickets to the November 12 NEXTEL Cup race at PIR.

WHY: US DOT / NHTSA 2004 NATIONAL DATA:
  • Statistics and research clearly show that 21-34 year old males are the demographic most likely to be involved in an automobile crash, drive when impaired by alcohol, and fail to buckle up.
  • In 2004, 16,694 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related car crashes.
  • Top prevention tips -- designate a sober driver and always wear a safety belt.
  • Safety belt use in the United States rose to 82 percent in 2005 from 58 percent in 1994. [NHTSA, Technical Report, Safety Belt Use in 2004 – Overall Results, September 2004]
  • Each percentage-point increase in safety belt use represents 2.8 million more people buckling up, approximately 270 more lives saved, and 4,000 injuries prevented annually, NHTSA estimates. [NHTSA, FY2003 Performance Plan, 2002]
  • NHTSA estimates nearly half of the unbuckled fatalities could have survived a crash if there were properly restrained.
AZDOT 2004 stats:
  • 1,152 people were killed on Arizona’s roads; 68 percent of the fatalities were NOT buckled up.
  • 38 percent, or 435 fatalities, were a result of alcohol-related crashes.
  • 141 occupants between 16-and-20-years-old were killed in crashes; 71 percent were NOT wearing seat belts.
  • There were 73,376 injuries in 138,353 crashes.

AZ GOHS:“GOHS is proud to partner with these local and national organizations to help make your streets safer by creating motorists more aware of their responsibilities behind the wheel,” said Michael Hegarty, Deputy Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “We applaud their efforts and resources to spread this valuable message to racing fans and all those who use Arizona’s roads.”
