NATIONAL CAMPAIGN: Responsibility Has Its Rewards™
MARLINS MESSAGES: Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk and Buckle Up - Every Trip, Every Time™
RHIR PARTNERS INCLUDE:
- Florida Marlins
- Florida Department of Transportation
- TEAM Coalition (Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management)
WHO: Fans and the Community
WHAT: The Florida Marlins, Florida DOT, and TEAM invited fans at the Marlins games on July 20, 21, and 22 to make the Responsibility Has Its Rewards pledge to always have
a designated driver, never drive drunk, and always buckle up. Fans who made the pledge were eligible
to tape their own RHIR responsibility messages. Over 100 fans or groups of fans read a
pre-defined script from a teleprompter and received a copy of their message electronically. Fans’ messages may be
selected to be included in a broadcast traffic safety message, public
service announcement and/or vignette.
Three lucky Marlins fans that participated in the filming were selected to win a batting practice experience with
the Marlins. Those winners are:
- Sandra Perez
- Kip LaChore
- Carol Julian
This effort was in conjunction with local law enforcement who were out at the game on July 20th. Fans who were buckled up as they
drove into the parking lot at Dolphin Stadium were rewarded with vouchers to attend future Marlins games. The buckle up effort
will continue several more times at Dolphin Stadium throughout the remainder of the season. See photos.
WHERE: Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL
WHEN: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday July 20th, 21st, and 22nd; 5:00 pm – end of game (Custom RHIR Safety Message taping)

US DOT / NHTSA 2005 NATIONAL DATA:
- In 2005, 14,539 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related (BAC > 0.08) car crashes
- Many, if not most of those lives would have been saved if people did not drive
when they were impaired by alcohol or if they used sober, designated drivers or if
they simply wore their seat belts.
- Statistics and research clearly show that 21-34 year old males are the demographic
most likely to be involved in an automobile crash, drive when impaired by alcohol, and
fail to buckle up.
